Open networks in Riyadh: what others see, and what to switch off
Coffee shops in Riyadh double as offices, and mall Wi-Fi is where a fair amount of shopping happens. The convenience is real; so is the fact that an open network is shared with everyone else sitting on it. This page covers what other people on the same connection can pick up, how a rogue hotspot imitates a familiar name, and which auto-join settings on your phone and laptop are worth switching off today. It also covers protecting payments and calls, and where Premium VPN fits into an ordinary Riyadh day.

What the person two tables away can see
On a genuinely open network, with no password or one password shared by every guest, your traffic passes through equipment that other people on the same network can also reach. Anyone running a packet capture sees which services your phone contacts, when it does so, and the names of devices it talks to. Anything sent without encryption, such as an older website or an unsecured file share, can be read more directly. Modern apps encrypt in transit, so the everyday risk is less about your messages being read word for word and more about the outline they draw: which bank, which employer, which booking. Assume the room can see the shape even when it cannot see the detail.
Rogue hotspots wear a familiar name
A rogue hotspot is somebody else's access point broadcasting a name that sounds official, such as a café chain with an extra letter or a hotel brand without the room number. You join because the name looks right, and from that moment your traffic passes through their device, where it can be logged, altered, or redirected to a fake sign-in page asking for an email password or the one-time code sent to your phone. Two habits blunt this. Ask staff for the exact network name rather than picking from the list on your screen, and decline any sign-in page that wants a card number, a national ID or an SMS code. Genuine café Wi-Fi has no reason to ask for them.
Auto-join is the setting deciding for you
Most phones and laptops are set to join open networks without asking, which is how a device you never handed to anyone ends up connected to a food court network you walked past once. On iOS, open Settings, then Wi-Fi, tap the network and turn Auto-Join off. On Android, look under Wi-Fi and saved networks, delete places you no longer visit, and check the option that turns Wi-Fi on automatically. On Windows, switch off suggested open hotspots and turn on random hardware addresses. On macOS, set the prompt to ask before joining. Then clear the saved list, because old names are exactly what a rogue hotspot copies.
Before you open the banking app in a mall
Order of operations matters more than any single setting. When you sit down with a coffee or wait for a table, connect the VPN first, then open the banking app, the work mailbox or the payment page, never the other way round. That closes the window between joining a network and protecting the session. Keep file and printer sharing switched off while you are out, and turn off AirDrop or Nearby Share. Move large transfers and card details to mobile data or home broadband. When you leave, disconnect from the network instead of letting the phone sit on it for the rest of the evening.

Frequently asked questions
Can someone on the same café Wi-Fi really see my passwords?
Rarely in plain text, since most app and website logins are encrypted in transit. What is easier to observe is which services you use and when. The sharper risk is a fake sign-in page on a rogue hotspot, which collects a password you typed yourself. Protecting the connection closes the first gap, and checking the network name closes the second.
How do I tell whether a hotspot is genuine?
Ask staff for the exact network name and compare it letter by letter with what your phone shows, because rogue hotspots imitate familiar names closely. Be suspicious if joining demands a card number, a national ID or an SMS code, or if the sign-in page does not look like the venue. When unsure, stay on mobile data.
Which auto-join settings should I turn off first?
Start with whatever joins open networks without asking: Auto-Join on iOS, saved open networks on Android, suggested hotspots on Windows, and ask-to-join prompts on macOS. Then delete networks you no longer use. A device that connects on its own is the easiest one for a rogue hotspot to catch in a mall.
Does a VPN slow down a café or mall connection?
There is a small overhead, and on a busy shared network it is usually not the part you notice. If a call stutters, pick a server in a nearby country such as the UAE, Bahrain or Qatar, close background downloads and app updates, and start the VPN before you dial rather than during the call.
